Sharon Abney, PT, DPT
Doctor of Physical Therapy
Dr. Sharon Abney is originally from Boca Raton, Florida, but has spent most of her life here in Cobb County. Sharon completed her undergraduate at Samford University receiving a bachelors degree in Exercise Science and a doctorate degree in Physical Therapy from Mercer University in 2014.
She began her PT career in the orthopedic setting and then switched gears and has spent a large portion of her PT career in the pediatric physical therapy world. She joins our staff with an expertise in pediatric physical therapy, and is excited to merge her love and expertise for pediatric patients with treating the adult orthopedic population. Her pediatric background gives her a unique perspective when treating patients and understanding how pediatric development can carry over into possible future adult orthopedic injury or musculoskeletal dysfunction.
Sharon played Division 1 college soccer at Samford University. Following her playing career, she spent several years coaching at her Alma Mater. Sharon has coached players as young as 4 years old all the way up to the collegiate level. She loves that she can incorporate a fusion of coaching, training, and being a physical therapist as she provides the best physical therapy experience possible when working with her youngest patients all the way up to the active adult population. As a competitive athlete her entire life, she is naturally intrigued by movement and the human body. She has experienced first-hand setbacks with her own injuries and the process involved with rehabilitation. The physical, mental and emotional factors are each a very important piece of the puzzle in the rehab process and Sharon strives to take into account each of these components to optimize overall patient care and recovery.
She has continuing education experience in orthopedics, pediatric orthopedics and sports injuries, pediatric bowel and bladder dysfunction, myofascial release, manual trigger point release techniques, utilizing pilates for rehab, and many other pediatric issues. Sharon’s current topics of study and interest are in pelvic floor dysfunction in the pediatric population, adult pelvic health and myofascial manipulation. Sharon is currently in the process of attaining her certification in dry needling through Myopain.
Sharon currently resides in East Cobb with her husband and 5 young children. She and her family enjoy time together playing outdoors, adventuring to find new waterfalls and trails, coaching her kids sports teams and being involved in church ministry activities. Sharon is a lover of adventure, running, cooking, baking, and playing guitar and piano with her kids.
